Other artists in the 1970 Picasso donation

We are celebrating the donation of Picasso to our museum in 1970 with the exhibition «Other artists in the 1970 Picasso donation», from April 6th to September 3rd 2017. An exhibition curated by Malén Gual, conservator of the Museu Picasso of Barcelona.

The visitor can enjoy a selection of 31 works, paintings and drawings by artists that Picasso left in family homes when he moved to Paris and which, subsequently, in 1970 he would donate to the museum in memory of his friend Jaume Sabartés.

The spectator will be surrounded by works by companions and students of Picasso’s father, and of works by friends and colleagues of the artist, gathered together during the period of his studies at la Llotja and Quatre Gats, among which it is worth highlighting the works of Carles Casagemas, Santiago Rusiñol, Manolo Hugué, Julio González and Manuel Pallarès.

Various works of these artists are exhibited alongside works of Pablo Picasso from our collection, so as to be able to compare and complement both artistic creations. The works also include a brief biography of each artist in the exhibition, which explain the relation, direct or indirect, that they had with Picasso.

With regard to parallelisms between the works, we can highlight the drawing of the life model of Manuel Pallarès, situated between two drawings of a young Picasso.

On the right we find a drawing done by Picasso at the same time, with the same model in an identical pose. This counter-position allows us to observe the ability of both artists to capture the essence, the personality and the volume of the body of the model, with a captivating game of lights and shadows in both cases.   On the left-hand side, a portrait of Pallarès done by Picasso, in which the spectator can observe the artist drawing with a raised hand seated in front of an easel, linking it directly with the previously mentioned work, and we can imagine ourselves to be situated in one of the classrooms of the school of la Llotja, where they met in 1895 and where they began their friendship which would last throughout their lives.

You will be able to find the latest information about the exhibition in the social networks with the hashtag: #PicassoOtherArtists and on our website.
