The Museu Picasso will host four temporary exhibitions in 2018

2018 will be marked by the four temporary exhibitions that we will be organising at the Museu Picasso of Barcelona: «Picasso kitchen», «Picasso discovers Paris», «Pablo Picasso and the publishers Gustavo Gili» and «Sabartés by Picasso by Sabartés».

This was announced by the director of the Museum, Emmanuel Guigon, in the press conference that we held with the media on 31st January.

Four proposals that cover different periods and aspects of the artist from Malaga, and which will serve to complement our permanent collection. As follows we will explain more details so that you can save the date in your diary.

La cuina de Picasso (exposició 2018)

«Picasso kitchen», from May 25th to September 30th

The first exhibition of the year will explain the relation between Picasso and the world of the kitchen, and it will be curated by the director of the Museum, Emmanuel Guigon; the chief conservator, Claustre Rafart; and the professor from the Université de Picardie Jules Verne and of the UFR des Arts, Androula Michael.

Around 200 of our own works or from other museums and institutions from all over the world will be exhibited with the aim of tackling the kitchen as a source of creativity of Picasso. Not only paintings of fruit, vegetables and cooking utensils, but also with photographs and texts written by the artist.

Parallel to this, it will deal with the importance of cafés and restaurants as a starting point of the avant-garde during the early years of the 20th century, such as, for example, the Quatre Gats of Barcelona or the Lapin Agile de Montmartre, in Paris.

For this exhibition, we have counted on the collaboration of the chef Ferran Adrià, who participated in the official catalogue and will be the protagonist of one of the rooms of the exhibition.

Picasso descobreix París (exposició 2018)

«Picasso discovers Paris», from September 18th to January 6th

With this exhibition, curated by the conservator of the Museu Picasso Malén Gual, we find ourselves in the period of the first trips that the artist went on to Paris, between the years 1900 and 1904.

The exhibition was born as the result of the exchange of works on loan that the Museum made to the exhibition “Picasso bleu et rose” of the Musée d’Orsay of Paris and jointly organized with the Musée National Picasso-París.

Picasso was amazed by the bohemian life and the vitality of the French capital, which had just held the Universal Exposition of 1900. In the exhibition you will be able to see some of the works done during those years, as well as the influence that he received from artists such as Albert Bartholomé, Puvis de Chavannes or Eugène Carrière.

The selection of works will take into account the review by Felicien Fagus about the exhibition «Picasso and Iturrino» published in the Revue Blanche on 15th July 1901, and also the works of Picasso that refer to other artists.

Pablo Picasso i els editors Gustavo Gili

«Pablo Picasso and the publishers Gustavo Gili», from November 23rd to February 24th

The professional relation of Picasso with the publishers Gili will be the theme of the third exhibition of 2018, curated by the conservator of the Museum Claustre Rafart. An exhibition that will necessarily be linked to the city of Barcelona.

The collection that will be exhibited, comes from the donation that Museum received in 2004 from the couple, Gustau Gili Esteve and Anna Maria Torra, friends of Pablo Picasso and Jacqueline Roque, as well as the publisher himself, Gustavo Gili.

The exhibition will be broken down into two parts. The first will be in the framework of the nineteen twenties, when the founder of the publishing house, Gustau Gili Roig, asked the artist to illustrate some of their books. The second part takes place some years later, from 1956 onwards, when Gustau Gili Esteve, son of the founder, made contact once again and established a working relation and friendship which would last until the death of Picasso in 1973.

Some of the works have never been published, given that it will be the first time that they have been exhibited in public since the acquisition of the documentary collection by the Museum.

Sabartés per Picasso per Sabartés (exposició 2018)

«Sabartés by Picasso by Sabartés», from November 23rd to February 24th

This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of Jaume Sabartés, and that’s why we will be dedicating a specific exhibition to a man who was not only an intimate friend and secretary of Picasso but also the main promoter of our Museum.

In the exhibition you will be able to see the portraits that Picasso did of Sabartés and which include all the techniques: drawing, painting, engraving and even literature. But there will also be portraits and photographs of Sabartés done by other artists, from Carlos Valenti to David Douglas Duncan.

We will also remember the foundation of the Museum, which opened in 1963 with the name of Sabartés Collection to respect the anti-Franco feeling of Picasso, and the role of being a hinge that Sabartés played in front of the Catalans who wanted to know the work of Picasso first-hand.

Another relevant aspect is that, on reaching the 50th anniversary of the death of Sabartés, we will be able to open and make available to researchers of his personal archive, until now in the custody of the Museum.

The curators of the exhibition will be the director of the Museum, Emmanuel Guigon, and the person in charge of the library, Margarida Cortadella.
