This announcement of the launch of the online Museum library catalogue will probably come as a surprise to many of you, and some of you may even have the feeling that you have already consulted it. The fact is that our regular users have previously had access to the physical catalogue in situ, in the Museum’s public consultation space, but what we are presenting here is the online catalogue, available on the Internet.
Most of the major Catalan libraries put their catalogues up on the Internet in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, a number of smaller but nonetheless historic institutions with limited staff and resources such as the Museu Picasso — we started in 1963 — have been working over the last few years on the retrospective cataloguing of the print catalogue and at the same time on the cataloguing of the documents we have been acquiring.
The project for the digital catalogue
The project for the automation of our holdings is part of a joint project being undertaken by the specialist libraries of several municipal museums (the Museu d’Història, the Museu de la Música, the Museu Etnològic and the Museu Frederic Marès). In our case, in 2003 we launched a project to modernize the museum library, which included, among other things, the creation of an automated catalogue of the holdings. We were working on the basis of the old card catalogue, closed in 1991, and a very diverse typology of documents.

The list of Pablo Picasso subject descriptors
During these few years, in addition to feeding our information into the libraries management programme, we have created a specific and fully contextualized list of subject descriptors on Pablo Picasso. We have developed this using various tools, including the Dictionnaire Picasso by Pierre Daix and other monographs and books we regard as key references for the artist’s life and work, as well as the catalogues of libraries both here (CCUC) and elsewhere (MNCARS, Málaga, Getty Library, British Library and Bibliothèque Nationale, to name a few). Obviously, we have also used the Enciclopèdia catalana and, of course, the Llista d’encapçalaments de matèries en català (LEMAC), the Catalan subject headings list maintained and updated by the Biblioteca de Catalunya. At present this list of descriptors on Picasso can be found in Catalan and Spanish. Our next step will be to translate it into English and French soon, and needless to say we hope to offer it in many more languages in due course.
As you will see, the basic search tool is very easy to use and works as a free text search in various fields at once. The advanced search mechanism will make it possible, among other things, to select the typologies of documents and the languages in which they are published.
