Teacher training course: art as an experience and participative process

Last week registrations were opened for the training course for primary and secondary school teachers that we organise each year from the Department of Educational Services of the museum, and which will take place from July 4th to 8th.

This is a course that from the Education and Activities Service we are very excited about, given that it allows us to work in greater depth and to share working lines that, based on the possibilities offered to us by our collection, are not limited to just carrying out a historical exploration but that explore how art can serve as a top level transversal educational tool.

Carrying out work based on the work of art and on the artistic process allows us to open up more approaches to Picasso and not just a vision more focused on historical-artistic aspects, given that it proposes options which are more open and closer to the reality of the classroom. Also, working from the basis of the artistic process allows all of us (participants and organisers, turning us in to another member of the group) to learn from the praxis and the participation, and to generate experiences that are positive and long-lasting.

The structure of the course has varied a lot over the seven years that we have been holding it, and while at the beginning we invited a diversity of lecturers who explained their experiences to us, we have been developing, for the past two years, a training course based on process as a learning methodology.

This has required to reduce the number of speakers (and having to do without some magnificent collaborators, unfortunately) so as to be able to focus on just 2 or 3 proposals but of greater length, to provide the teachers with the opportunity of living and experimenting open methodologies that include the interests of the students, in a practical and vivential approach that will allow them to incorporate these work processes; that is to say, to put into practice the techniques and projects we have developed, so as to provide the teacher, through a personal experience, with the tools to apply them afterwards in the classroom.

In this course, with contributions from Dimas Fàbregas, Xavier Garriga, Carles Parellada and Oriol Vilapuig, we have rethought the contents and propose exploring various ways of artistic expression in which the life itself of the artist becomes art, and how life experiences can be used as raw material in the classroom to use them as the departing point to work, from the arts, on a whole series of skills.

These changes in approach have also led us to a change of format and order of contents, and this year we propose first living four days of experimentations led by Dimas Fàgregas, Xavier Garriga and Oriol Vilapuig and to end up, on the last day, with some theoretical reflections, provided by Dimas Fàbregas and Carles Parellada, about the processes that have been followed and what contributions and implications these have in the classroom – and maybe beyond.
